Definition of nationality

Nationality is a legal status that indicates to which country a person belongs as a “national.” Having a nationality entitles an individual to the protection of that country, while also imposing obligations such as paying taxes and complying with its laws. In other words, nationality represents the legal bond that connects a person with a state.

In Japan, the principle of jus sanguinis—acquiring nationality through one’s parents—is applied, meaning that a child generally obtains Japanese nationality if either parent is Japanese. There is also a system of naturalization, through which foreign nationals who meet certain requirements may acquire Japanese nationality. Because nationality can significantly influence a person’s life path and future, choosing one’s nationality is an extremely important decision.

Nationality is not merely a legal concept; it is deeply tied to an individual’s identity and way of life. For this reason, decisions involving nationality often come with uncertainty and concern.

As an immigration/legal documentation specialist, I regard each client’s decision about nationality as a major life choice. I aim to understand the weight of that decision and provide support with empathy and care for each individual.
